Q: What do you get when you cross North with Cartlidge Levene and Farrow…
Is that a compliment? ;)
They seem to be popular, but there are the odd few that think their work looks a bit dated.
Oh its complimentary, yes sir!! I was making a reference to the pedigree from which Bibliothèque has been created, their work is marvelous, and yes I’ve heard people call them sterile, cold, a parody of the mid-20th-century greats – but I would argue, that the discipline that goes into the work is modernist… structure, order, economy, functional typography, pure communication, this is NOT a style, this is an attitude, it’s a way of being, and a way which is still favoured and practiced by many studios in this country and across Europe.
I would never say they were out of date, I think over the last year or so there is a real renaissance with the 70′s designers like Herb Lubalin, Lou Dorfsman and display typefaces like Carousel, Grouch, Caslon Graphique, things have loosed up, and got a little decorative, but I guarantee give it a few months and we’ll be using Helvetica and a modular grid again :D

Nicely said. Things have gotten a little decorative indeed but that’s never really appealed to me, unless of course, it’s done right and it works ;) I think the thing that makes Bibliothèque’s work so good is the fact that it communicates and doesn’t decorate – you can navigate your way around the work almost effortlessly and it just looks really nice. Suffice to stay, this way of thinking, is here to stay for a while yet ;)
I’m a big fan. If they are considered by some to be old fashioned then I would love to be as old fashioned as them.
