The Writers Block – A promotional piece for writers at the Pond

Ladies and gentlemen, it gives me great pleasure to introduce you to the work of New Zealand based designer Brogen Averill. Afters stints in London and Paris working with design agencies on big brands and niche projects, he returned to New Zealand in 2004 bringing his distinct European style to bear on a range of projects from branding to signage, packaging to web.

With work that exhibits a high degree of craft and attention to detail, I found it rather surprising that Brogen has received very little in terms of online exposure. But I guess this feature on SI plays one small but considerable part in changing all that :)
Enjoy and I have a great weekend folks. Keep your eyes peeled for something special next week…

Absolutely class work and from NZ too!

  2. Iain

I remember the Department Store Branding in an issue of Monocle, great to put a name to the designer. Does anyone know the font used on The Lover postcards?

  3. David

@Iain That font would appear to be Neutraface – Neutra Display Light and Neutra Display Titling. Hope that helps.

  4. Australasia is killing it!

  5. You made my day! I didn’t know about him, great work and nice navigation too, a bit familiar for me :)

  6. Once again an unbelievable update! Thank you for featuring it.

outstanding work. The writers block piece really works for me, so nice

  7. That’s the second website today using the same WP theme.. Love the work though – Department Store stuff works really well

  8. I agree with you David, am surprised that Brogen hasn’t gotten much exposure online…until now—thanks for the post. Stunning work.

  9. P/S—On closer look, is that a fly or insect of some sort in that 3rd Debbie Does photo that I see?

  10. German

Love the work, a typographic style in all of it, like it!!!

  11. JJ

Average. Nice enough work, but average.

  12. Ejay

The reference to “Debbie Does Dallas” is intentional right?

  13. David

@Melissa – I’m not entirely sure why it’s there but obviously it’s there for reason otherwise it would have been ‘shopped out. Perhaps I should ask Brogen…

    @Ejay – It can’t be anything else ;)

  14. Absolutely loving the colors here!

  15. James

whats the serif font on the newspaper… the page with list of names?

  16. Steve

^ James the font on the newspaper is “didi”

  17. David

@James @Steve It’s a didone that’s for sure. My best bet would be to go with Didoni or you can check out the thread below for alternatives:

yeh Didoni looks bang on thanks David.

  19. Yip, the New Zealand design sector is BOSS!
…and while a lot of our best and brightest leave us, NZ always lures them back – where they use all that american or european experience and then kill it back at home!

  20. I live in Auckland and it’s amazing how many things you miss just because you live a few miles away. Really, really liking this work!

  21. Catherine

Brilliant! Anyone know the name of the font used for Fraser Clements Photography?

  22. Ben

    @Catherine re: Fraser Clements

    Looks like Gotham Bold.

  23. MAUD

Just amazing. I wish I could work in a place like that!
