Build Identity & Stationery
Design Build

“Complete stationery set design for the studio (Letterhead/Continuation sheet/Envelope/Business cards/Postcard/Compliment slip/Address label). Foil blocked identity stripe/typography on GF Smith Crane’s Crest stock.
Print by Generation Press.”

I was having a look through my archives the other day and noticed that whilst there are plenty of features on consultancies such as MadeThought and Spin; Build—who I think you’ll agree are in same league as these two studios—have only been featured TWICE. That’s right, two posts in 2 years. I guess you could say I felt a bit guilty about the situation, so I decided that it was only right to feature their excellent, albeit older work again before that new website launches… ;)

I love this range. Different but effective. Is that flush with fluoro ink on the reverse…?

You may have to ask Michael for the full specs. If you’re lucky he’ll read the comments on this post and answer your question ;)

  3. I’m glad I’m not the only person in the world who thinks Build’s stationery is great. Everyone I talk to seems to criticise it loads and I can’t see why. I think maybe they’re just jealous of Michael Place’s eye for typography and layout.

I think that people are just not accustomed to seeing stationery with a layout that defies the norm. Either that, or they fail to make a connection with Michael’s unique brand of “reductionism”. Maybe that’s the real reason – personal taste – because as far as I know, this range of stationery is as functional as any other (well designed) I’ve seen and I say that without bias.

As a small feedback, it would indeed be lovely to actually get the print specs, seeing as this site goes a bit in depth into print stuff. Kind of like http://www.underconsideration.com/fpo/.

I for one would love to see some specs!

  6. Grez – Thank you, yes it is.
    James – Thank you.
    David – Cheers sir.

  7. oh my, isn’t this lovely… I haven’t seen this before, and it’s not in keeping with Michael’s other work – but so original and so beguiling.

  8. Love the typography and the way you fill out date etc by yourself! Magnifico!

  9. As Gordon says, it would be lovely to have this on FPO, if you are up for it Michael. Here is our submission form, let me know if you have any questions.

  10. What I always liked about the set was that it wasn’t what people expected. I’m pretty sure some people expect everything Michael/Build do to be heavy on vectors and decorative.

When you look deeper though the stationery is actually a really well thought out and versatile system with the expected flourish of beautiful print.

  11. Really nice, indeed!

I wouldd LOVE to see the letterhead with an actual text (or some lorem ipsum) though.
Always interesting to see how it reacts with or without the actual content of the letter.

Sidenote: just found out it’s a former classmate who took care of the website development (cheers jérôme!)
