Cartlidge Levene

I love the “Brick-work: thinking and making” book designed by Cartlidge Levene for Sergison Bates, but that isn’t the reason why I decided to give them a post. You see I was digging through some old sketchbooks and I found a great quote from Ian based on the subject of grids. I spent a good few minutes trying to decipher my toddler-like scribbles but I got there in the end:
Grids are “a means to an end and not an end in themselves… they are never at the forefront of my mind.” Grids help a designer to piece together a project in a coherent way, often making the production more seamless,” but the ultimate objective of this process is to produce “a beautiful piece of communication.”
Brockmann and Crouwel fanboys may disagree with the wise words of Mr. Cartlidge, but that’s why I have this blog – to discuss design related matters that would probably put your Dad to sleep (that’s if he isn’t a graphic designer) ;)

Sage words indeed from Mr Cartlidge, where did you get that quote David? a lecture or from an interview?

IMO one of the best agencies in the country, I have always admired their approach… simple yet elegant, beautifully crafted and timeless modernist graphic design. You only have to look around at the off shoot agencies to see their influence!

    ;)

  4. I’d have thought grids would be a more prominent fixture with them as their work often seems very structured. I agree with him, sometimes it’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture in terms of struggling to follow ‘the rules’, and you just need to use the grid as a tool not letting it dictate how a project turns out. They do create very beautiful work that does communicate really well.

U_helv, it was actually from a book, although I’m not sure about title because I wrote it down a while back! I’m pretty sure it was book on grids ;)

    Emma,

Nicely said Emma. I’ve never been too caught up on grids, typography is what I’m all about ;)
If you’re wondering about the poster, I’m currently sorting out the SeptemberIndustry big cartel shop ;)

  7. Aha OK I’ll look forward to it, hope you’re not gonna have too much nice stuff on there for me to fritter away my cash on.

    Emma,

At the moment I just have the one poster but I may add some other bits and pieces. I actually have various books (in mint condition) that could do with new owners ;)
