I love the “Brick-work: thinking and making” book designed by Cartlidge Levene for Sergison Bates, but that isn’t the reason why I decided to give them a post. You see I was digging through some old sketchbooks and I found a great quote from Ian based on the subject of grids. I spent a good few minutes trying to decipher my toddler-like scribbles but I got there in the end:
Grids are “a means to an end and not an end in themselves… they are never at the forefront of my mind.” Grids help a designer to piece together a project in a coherent way, often making the production more seamless,” but the ultimate objective of this process is to produce “a beautiful piece of communication.”
Brockmann and Crouwel fanboys may disagree with the wise words of Mr. Cartlidge, but that’s why I have this blog – to discuss design related matters that would probably put your Dad to sleep (that’s if he isn’t a graphic designer) ;)
