Firstly, a big thank you to Caroline @ Grafik for this opportunity. I really wasn’t expecting to be given the “lead feature” i.e. the biggest image on the site – for that I am honored and humbled!

Secondly, I apologise for the numerous typos in the interview that make certain Youtube commenters look literate (some of you will know what I mean by this). Despite checking the piece multiple times, it was a long day and I was still in recovery mode from the flu; that’s my poor excuse ;) . Corrections will be made shortly (I’ve already emailed Caroline).

You may also be interested to know that a refreshed version of SI will be going live next week (hopefully). I’ll still be using the current theme, but there will be some noticeable changes that should hopefully improve the overall functionality of the site. It isn’t a complete redesign however, that will come later on in the year when I finally commission [insert studio name here] to design the SeptemberIndustry identity.

There are also 2 new Sessions in the works: one with a Swiss duo I’ve shown much love to in the past and the other with a London based consultancy who have been featured on this site more times than I can remember!

Click here to waste a couple minutes of your life reading the interview.

Let’s be frank, it was never originally my intention to advertise jobs on this site, however, my attitude changed with just the way Frédéric (Creative Director of Coast) approached me in his email. If that wasn’t enough, he was even kind enough to send me a couple of exclusive spreads from their interview featured in the forthcoming book ‘Studio Culture!’

“Coast is looking for a graphic designer with at least 2 years professional experience. We look for someone understanding culture and brands, with an eye for details in page layout, typography and photography. We also look for someone thinking globally, from designing a logotype to implementing an identity on all surfaces. Video/Flash is a plus. Clients include the corporate and culture sector.

Please send Portfolios PDF files or website links to frederic@coastdesign.be

We will contact the selected designer for an interview.”

Today I thought I take the time to reflect on the past 12 months this site has been running because it’s only SeptemberIndustry’s 1st anniversary today (Sorry no self indulgent poster this year) ;)

Before I inflate my ego to disdainful proportions I’d first like to apologise to all those people that took the time to send me emails and subsequently never received a reply. I do appreciate what you have/had to say, but due to the sheer volume of:

- Comments
- Suggestions
- Requests
- Shameful Plugs

I receive every day I can’t respond to every single one (I do try). What can I say though? It’s hard work dividing my day to day responsibilities of being designer and being a secret agent for the MI6. (I’ve been pestering them to redesign their site for ages.)

So If I’m not:

- Attempting to understand engrish from Asian clients (Before you call me racist, I’m half Korean myself);
- Inhaling the fumes of a fresh piece of printed literature like a crackhead;
- Or; zooming up to 6500% to kern type;

I’m probably attired in an impeccable Brioni suit; using my ninja techniques to kill the bad guys and rescue the princess from the burning minimalist tower (designed by John Pawson). So If that isn’t a good enough excuse as to why I can’t respond to every email that I receive, I don’t know what is! ;)

Anyway, I think you can agree that this site has has come a long way from what it was 1 year ago: just another design blog (although at the time there was a considerably lower amount of decent graphic design blogs on the internet than there are now.) Nonetheless, SeptemberIndustry has received such a positive response from various reputable figures/agencies in the design industry; the fact that people acknowledge the hard work I put into this site is just the nicest compliment one can receive. So a warm thanks are in order because if it wasn’t for all you punters visiting this site every week, I’d have been an author at a certain FFF by now! ;)

Before I get back to “work” I thought I’d clear the rumours up:

SeptemberIndustry is a one man army and is not:

- A group of people
- A Corporation
- A Top Secret Organisation
- A blog that features 18th Century Art

Yours Minimally

David

-
The featured image is from a D/AD project I worked on last year. More sooner or later.

I’m happy to announce that SeptemberIndustry is finally back after a short hiatus.

That’s bad news for you unfortunately – you’re going to have to put up with my weekly antics all over again.

So what’s changed? Pretty much everything as you may have noticed. I felt it was time to stray away from the conventional blog layout and try something new and more visual. It wasn’t my original intention to include the overlapping /images, but like I mentioned before, I wanted to kick the traditional “500px wide blog image” in the belly and try something new. Remember, It can always be changed later.
One of the many things I realised whilst designing the new theme was the fact that on the old SI, every post was tagged with “graphic design.” I won’t be doing that anymore because it’s quite frankly, pointless tagging every post with graphic design when the blog itself is dedicated to graphic design. From now on each post wil be tagged according to the nature of the work featured, which will hopefully make it easier for you, dear reader to search for what you want in that swanky apple search bar you see at the top right of the screen. Safari is a beautiful thing.

I’ve still got some sorting out to do with the, “about” and “links” pages which you can access in that neat little drop down at the top right, but everything else is pretty much in order. It’s also worth noting that I might not be able to post every single day like before because this version of SI requires a lot more time and preparation to run as you can imagine!

Other than that, I hope you find the new version of SI acceptable, and I do encourage you to say hello. Don’t be shy ;)

Have a good one,

David
