LSE Housing and the City
This publication contains research created by students over a period of one term. Hyperkit was invited to host a series of workshops with students to help them with the visual presentation of their research and we were then commissioned to design a book to publicise their findings and ideas.

Students worked together in groups of six, each focusing on a different aspect of housing within the London Borough of Southwark. The reader navigates the publication by black tabs which correlate with the contents page. The final publication is 164 pages, 200 x 270mm, and has a greyboard cover which has been foil-blocked.

△
Joe and Co.
Hyperkit looked to deconstruct the traditional barbershop situation and rebuild it for a contemporary audience with all its recognisable parts present.

Initial inspiration for Joe and Co came from looking at how objects are organised within the traditional barbershop, as well as workshops, sheds and garages. This led to us developing a collaged aesthetic when designing the space and the furniture within, combining materials and textures in a very straightforward and functional fashion.

The main materials used for bespoke furniture at the shop are solid English oak, oak-veneered plywood and powder-coated steel. We used oak as it is a warm, natural material that can be traditionally crafted. The coloured steel items were chosen to contrast with the wood. Throughout the construction it was important to us that you would see how the furniture was made; this is mostly evident in the very visible joinery of the oak display frames and the inlaid metal shelves and troughs.

The graphic and geometric nature of the Joe and Co logo and printed material was conceived as a contemporary substitute to the traditional barbershop patterns such as the stripy red and white pole and the black and white checked lino floors.

△
Faye Toogood
We created the identity, print material and website for this interiors stylist. A bespoke pattern was created at A2 size that forms the back of the mailer. This same artwork was used to print the back of the stationery, resulting in 4 different letterheads and 48 different business cards.

As she works a lot with fabric, we wanted Faye’s stationery to reflect fabric swatches – when each small sample is a different part of a repeated pattern. This pattern endlessly repeats allowing Faye to use sheets of the paper to create her own wallpaper or hoarding whilst dressing a window for example.

We designed a website that Faye can update herself using a content management tool.

Established in 2001 by Kate Sclater and Tim Balaam, Hyperkit is a graphic design studio based in London. They produce good-natured, functional design, often bringing together a love of material, process and functionality. They like to create visual stories that help their clients connect with an audience or community and generate ideas by responding strategically and intuitively to any given situation. The studio members’ personal interests, fascinations and self-initiated projects inform their commissioned work, creating unique and effective solutions that reflect the sensibilities of their clients.

Projects are often multi-faceted in nature. To date the studio has produced graphic design for both print and websites (often building these in-house), as well as exhibitions, furniture and interiors. “We enjoy working with people that are as passionate about what they do as we are.”

Bristol Museum & Art Gallery — Wayfinding & Signage
We were commissioned by Bristol Museum & Art Gallery to design the wayfinding and signage for their historic Edwardian building.

The signage takes the form of elegant, painted timber, leaning panels that have minimum impact on the listed building stonework and provide a contemporary, but sensitive, new layer in the Edwardian interior.

The museum has a complex layout, with split levels on the upper floors. To improve understanding of this, we introduced wording such as ‘up to’ and ‘through to’, creating an intuitive flow through the building and avoiding complex level numbering such as 1st upper, 1st lower etc. An overview of the building layout is provided on large leaning directory panels in prominent positions on each floor and threshold panels create clear navigation through the individual galleries.

Other furniture items were designed as part of the signage family, including an information desk, leaflet display rack and marketing display panels.

Stanton Williams — Identity
Stanton Williams are an established, international architectural practice. Their core philosophy is ‘to inspire users through their experience of space, light and materials’. The practice has evolved over a 25 year period and we were commissioned to redesign their identity to reflect their current position and ethos.

With every project we take time to engage with our clients and gain an understanding of their working methods and underlying principles. After numerous conversations with the directors and partners we gained an invaluable insight into the practice.

Key concepts became apparent – ‘pushing and pulling volume’, ‘the beauty of raw, natural materials’ and a ‘rigorous attention to detail’. It was clear that a new, bold, confident language was emerging in Stanton William’s recent work and their desire was for the identity to reflect this shift.

Our solution was to create an elegant, structural logotype that hints at simple, constructed interlocking forms. The position of the common letter ‘A’ in both names dictates the alignment. Across the stationery this logotype is either pushed-into or removed-from carefully chosen, tactile materials such as 100% cotton paper and raw board, while rigorous typographic templates unify the extensive range of architectural documentation.

Externally, the logotype at the office entrance is water-cut through stainless steel.

Design Museum — Brit Insurance Designs of the Year 2010
The Brit Insurance Designs of the Year is the Design Museum’s annual awards event. An exhibition showcases approximately one hundred of the most innovative and forward thinking designs from around the world. An event at the Design Museum is held to announce the winner.

We designed the exhibition for the 2010 awards. Rather than design disciplines such as Architecture, Fashion, Graphics etc, the exhibition is curated by a series of seven conceptual themes such as Everyday Design, Cultural Heritage and Communication.

Our concept was to create a coherent, unobtrusive display to contain the eclectic mix of exhibits, ranging in scale from a car to a household plug. To achieve this, we designed a continuous, fluid ribbon that could rise and fall to create spaces and surfaces for the exhibits and create discrete zones for each theme. Each display ribbon uncoils from one of the gallery’s columns which are painted in bright colours with bold, graphic words to act as beacons indicating the start of each theme. A simple family of clear acrylic label holders integrate with the table tops and indicate the design disciplines, the category winners and the overall winner.

We also carried the graphic language from the exhibition through to the related awards material including the catalogue.

A firm favourite amoungst many a designer, Cartlidge Levene have updated their portfolio with some brand new work which once again reaffirms their position as one of London’s finest studios. This is clean, considered work at its best and because this is SeptemberIndustry you, dear reader, get all of this goodness in high resolution. ;)

One more thing, if there’s any studio out there that can make some of the most commonly used typefaces in design look fresh and inspiring, it’s CL. That is all ;)

Big thank you once again to all the fine folk at Cartlidge Levene for their generosity and of course to Melissa for making this feature happen. :)

Year 2004

As the end of 2010 comes to a close and with Christmas only a week away, I proudly present what may very well be the last SI special of 2010 (next Wednesday will probably be my last post/feature of the year). As per usual with SI Special Features I’ve come out guns blazing with over 40 high-res images of selected work from a studio I’ve had my eye on for a while now: FABIO ONGARATO DESIGN.

Founded in 1992 by partners Fabio Ongarato and Ronnen Goren, based in Australia, Fabio Ongarato Design is renowned for the diversity of its work. The studio takes an open approach to graphic design, operating across a variety of graphic disciplines, from print to exhibitions to advertising. FOD’s approach to design reflects their passion for architecture, photography and contemporary art. They work across a variety of fields such as fashion, corporate, arts and architecture deliberately crossing the boundaries between them.

I hope you (dear reader) enjoy the delicious contents of this feature and thank you once again to both Fabio and Daniel for making this feature possible. :)

Assin
Disciplines Identity, Environmental Design and Signage
Year 2004

Identity and environmental graphics for ASSIN, a high-end fashion store stocking international brands including Dior Homme, Hussein Chalayan, Victor + Rolf and many others. The identity was inspired by a sense of contradiction; that of high-end fashion, subverted by street graphics, graffiti, and stencils.

We were faced with two challenges. Firstly, the identity needed to complement the strong direction of the store interior, which is minimal, sleek, industrial and raw. Secondly, because the store is located in a basement, the wall graphics at the entrance needed to be exciting enough to draw people downstairs from the street into the store. The final graphics also needed to combine an irreverent quality – ASSIN means ‘like so’ in Portuguese – with a delicacy and refinement that expressed the sophistication of the store.

As well as being inspired by a sense of contradiction, we picked up on the idea of deconstruction: loose threads, raw edges, experimentation and ‘happy accidents’. The graphic colour palette is clean and simple: black and white for a quieter, sophisticated treatment, and the surprise of tomato to make a statement within the industrial palette of clean white walls, polished concrete floors and steel banisters.

Kerry Phelan Design Office
Disciplines K.P.D.O. Identity
Year 2010

K.P.D.O. is a new identity designed for Kerry Phelan Design Office, a newly formed, interior design studio in Melbourne. Kerry Phelan is one of the most respected and awarded interior designers in Australia. She co-founded Hecker Phelan in 1999, before forming Hecker Phelan and Guthrie in 2002. Kerry left HPG in December 2009 to pursue individual creative pursuits.

Moving from a brand to become a personable identity, we took an oldschool atelier / studio approach to reflect the purist, humble and approachable qualities of the studio. The idea is based in subtleties that count, allowing the work to speak for itself and not hide behind corporate branding.

Disciplines Invitation
Year 2007

By combining its enchanting French heritage with unique touches of modern design, Moët & Chandon’s Le Chapiteau Merveilleux marquee made itself one of the chicest and most desirable destinations to spend Melbourne Cup Day. The marquee’s decadent interior was designed by Bill Henson, one of Australia’s most distinguished artists. FOD were commsissioned to create the invitations to this prestigious event.

Taking the cues of the title of the marquee FOD created a series of photographs that represented the idea of illuminance. Created from crumpled gold foil the invitations evoked the sense of luxury, craft, opulence and most of all a mystique and anticipation of what the marquee would be.

Disciplines Publication
Year 2010

Still Vast Reserves is a two volume publication released to coincide with the reciprocal exchange exhibition of the same name held at Magazzino d’Arte Moderna, Rome, Italy in September 2009 and Gertrude Contemporary in July/August 2010.

Conceptually Still Vast Reserves explores the highly-charged intersections between the body and civic or social contexts. Through focusing on the interplay between the intimate/domestic and the public/structural the exhibition reminds the viewer of their own physicality, referring to the dynamics of compression, intimacy and release.
Derek Henderson – Mercy Mercer
Disciplines Monograph
Year 2010

Mercy Mercer is Derek Henderson’s second monograph. Shot in New Zealand focusing on the Waikato river, its neighbours and visitors. A visual narrative punctuated by unexpected moments that tell unofficial stories of New Zealand; tales of colonial invasion, poverty, immigration, boredom, and the ecological degradation of the landscape at the hands of commerce. Derek Henderson is one of New Zealand’s most renowned photographers. Two versions of the book were created – the limited edition comes in a cloth bound clam shell portfolio with a limited edition print.

First and foremost we created a book that best respects and reflects Henderson’s work. Every detail was carefully selected from the format and finishing to the typography and paper. Creating a cohesive sequence of his images was paramount to the narrative, telling the story of this journey along the Waikato river. Henderson’s interest in the ‘ordinary’ can be deceptive, his narratives often reveal themselves to be more complex and unsteady than they first appear. This inspired us to create the juxtaposition between the cover, which seems calm and classic but echoes an uneasy edge through the unique typeface design and the work itself.
Hassell
Disciplines Branding
Year 2008

HASSELL is a multidisciplinary architecture and design practice with studios in Australia, PR China, Hong Kong and Thailand. As part of a refreshed identity program, a new visual language was created by FOD across all business development, collateral and electronic touch points.

A new corporate profile was also created to showcase milestone projects created by HASSELL and to give insights into their working methodology. HASSELL’s design philosophy is based around the connection of their architecture to people and place. FOD worked with this idea to create a profile that imbued a sense of a human perspective. We commissioned two arts photographers to interpret their milestone projects and open work culture that eschewed the notion of heroic architecture photography void of people inhabiting space. Instead we documented human perspectives from capturing people living in space through to the hands on approach to thinking and design from internal studio practice.
Dale Frank – So Far The Art of Dale Frank 2005 –1980
Disciplines Book
Year 2008

In keeping with Frank’s continued exploration of the unfixed nature of physical and psychological tensions, the book had to be more suggestive rather than just iterative of his works. Needing to reflect his absorbed focus yet offset via his wish that such a book be accessible to younger people, we had to ‘uncomplicate’ Frank’s wide ranging oeuvre. So like his more recent varnished works where their form never stops taking shape; we had to find a way to depict these glimpses and ‘freeze’ them – yet leave the reader with a sense that the impetus and movement continues…

We have tried to make a vehicle for Frank’s works that functions more as an object rather than a book. From the unadorned cover slip to the disclosure of the inlaid cover, to the oozing yellow bordered edges; we attempt to echo Frank’s layers; his whispered as well as overt sensuality and his necessarily failed attempt of physical containment. Like his performance art installations, the reader participates in a retrospective reveal of his different styles and mediums over 25 years. His complex titling is presented as visuals in their own right, always challenging symbolic interpretation.

Here is a rather handsome exhibition identity, signage and catalogue designed by my good friend David (Creative Director) & the team at OPX London. The laser-engraved wood is a lovely touch and is something you don’t see that too often on SI ;). Cheers again to David for the nice big images and project info (which you can read more about on the right).

Crafts Council — Lab Craft
Our brief was to develop an identity for their touring exhibition ‘Lab Craft – Digital Adventures in Contemporary Craft’ – an event programme jointly curated by the Crafts Council and Max Fraser (design journalist and author). Lab Craft showcases makers who employ cutting-edge digital technologies (such as rapid prototyping, laser cutting, laser scanning and digital printing) and explores the use of technology as an extension to the capabilities of the human hand.

In collaboration with Tomoko Azumi (t.n.a design studio) we designed a visual identity and the exhibition’s printed materials, we wanted a typeface that had a monospaced and stencil fill as we knew we were going to laser etch card and other materials we settled for Monosten A by COLOPHON. The paper we used was Fedrigoni papers (Woodstock Camoscio 80gsm and Symbol Freelife Raster 200gsm) these stocks had a great texture to them and helped reinforce the ‘craft’ feel.

We were excited about how the digital technologies could be used in the exhibition design itself how the rapid prototyping to produce a 3D Crafts Council logo could look and laser-engraving for the Lab Craft logo and captions the results really helped combine the work and exhibition graphics as a whole.

The designs shown here are reproduced courtesy of the Crafts Council and the photography is reproduced courtesy of Sophie Mutevelian.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a fantastic project on its own, but is it enough to satisfy the incredibly hungry readers of SI who now demand post/features containing at least 10, hi-res images? Probably not… ;) Which is I decided to give Gary’s portfolio the SI treatment so to speak ;)

Thanks again to Gary for getting in touch.

“‘WalkRide’ is an information and movement identity for Newcastle/Gateshead that seamlessly combines information for both pedestrians and public transport users in the city. The first phase of the project has just been completed. It includes the livery and all related information for a new city centre electric bus system – QuayLink – and a new WalkRide city centre map for pedestrians. Cartlidge Levene were commissioned to develop a new map for the city to be distributed by the local Visitor Information Centres. For the pedestrian ‘Walk’ map, careful editing of information and a simple typographic hierarchy provides a balance between richness and legibility that help make it approachable and friendly. Illustrated landmarks are used as engaging elements to draw the user in. On the reverse ‘Ride’ side of the map, transport information is presented in a clear, simple manner to make the information as useful and digestible as possible. ‘Here’ and ‘There’ stickers were produced as a tool for use by the Visitor Information Centre staff to point out destinations and routes to visitors.”

Democracy gives everyone the right to be heard, but many can encounter difficulties in the voting process. “Blanke Ark” was designed to make the act of voting available and welcoming to everyone, including groups such as wheel-chair users, visually impaired and illiterates.
Initially the winning entry of the Norwegian States Design Competition 2008, ‘Blanke Ark’ was developed and tested during the Norwegian Parliamentary Elections 2009, and will be launched countrywide in the Local Elections in 2011.”

I’ve wanted to feature this project for quite some time now, but due to lack of large images, it was put on the back burner and subsequently forgotten about. That is, until a week ago, when I finally got round to emailing Line @ Blueroom requesting some nice big images and additional info as the project blurb on their website was a bit sparse on the details. Enjoy!

“The V&A’s Ceramics collections are one of its greatest glories and unrivalled in the world. The galleries, which were purpose built in 1909, have been refurbished by architects Stanton Williams and the display redesigned to present over 3,000 objects which tell the story of ceramics from the earliest Chinese pottery to contemporary ceramic art.

There is a run of six themed galleries plus a gallery devoted to a changing display. The centrepiece is the Ceramics Timeline which displays highlights of the entire collection dating from 3,500 BC to the present day.

We designed the gallery identity and graphic communication, working closely with the V&A curatorial team and Stanton Williams. At the heart of the display is a rigorous label information system which can be easily updated by the V&A. Printed on a magnetic substrate, the labels adhere to bespoke metal label holders for open display as well as integrating with Stanton Williams’ elegant display cases.

Large scale graphics such as dates painted directly onto walls are used to add richness and as navigational aids. A series of gallery introduction panels, coloured by gallery, carry 3d gallery titles, introductory text, orientation maps and hold large print books.

The Making Ceramics gallery is devoted to materials and techniques. A unique piece of low-tech interactive furniture, running the entire length of the gallery, explains the process of making ceramics. Designed in collaboration with Stanton Williams, the tabletop houses a sequence of information panels, flip-books and lift-up lids in the form of a modular tile system. A series of drawers contain in-depth information and hands-on activities to engage the family audience as well as the serious ceramics enthusiast. The front of the unit is faced with richly-coloured vitreous enamel graphics. Around the gallery walls, 3d letters inlaid into the cornicing list the rich vocabulary of ceramic processes.”

Did you really think I’d let this one slip? ;) I’ve just been patiently waiting for Melissa to send me some larger /images of the project for your own viewing pleasure (you know how much big /images excite me). Having been aware of this project for a year now, it’s nice to finally have the chance to see the fruits of their labour.

Those of you with sharp eyes will have noticed that the V&A Ceramics Gallery press release gives credit to the architects but fails to mention anything about the graphic designers. Why is that? Maybe this is why: “because anyone with a computer can call themselves a graphic designer. As a result our field has become oversaturated with hacks who undercut the value of what we do and make it harder for people to recognise the worth of competent graphic graphic design.” Feel free to discuss this issue in the comments section below.

On a different note but still Cartlidge Levene related, did I mention that there was going to be a Cartlidge Levene Session? I don’t think I have… ;)

A few more /images are available to view/share/save on Flickr. Have a nice weekend people.
