“Art direction and design of biannual press books highlighting new product ranges and seasonal trends.”

I was planning to get Daniel on this site ever since I was saw his tight selection of work a couple of months ago, however seeing as he had a fair amount of coverage at the time I decided to wait for another opportunity to get him on the site because nothing’s worse than having too much exposure because I feel that it can sometimes undermine or rather oversaturate the work. As fate would have it, however, Daniel actually took it upon himself to send me a rather charming email (last Saturday) and so naturally the option to say “no” was overruled. ;)

  1. I was happy to see this work, but when I visited Designer Daniel Baer website I was disappointed

  2. Darren

MadeThought renting out their photo studio nowadays?

    Suhail – That’s a bit harsh isn’t it? ;)
Alright, the website employs a print-based aesthetic and the project descriptions may be too small for some eyes, but it’s certainly a functional website with a clear sense of navigation. At the end of the day you have to respect the vision of the designer.

I want to remain neutral in this “MadeThought greyboard against a wall” argument so let’s emphasize both sides before coming to our own conclusions.

    1. It’s a fact that this technique of photographing work was originally devised by MadeThought. It almost functions as an extension of their “brand.” Therefore, replicating this photographic style/direction is more akin to “plagiarism” than it is to “paraphrasing.”

    2. Some may feel that you can’t claim authorship of simply photographing work against a greyboard/wall, so it becomes the norm right next to grey, white, black and reflective backdrops.

Always wondered who did a lot of the Liberty communications, now I know!, some lovely work on there. Thanks for the link David.

  6. David

    No problem C ;)
I also find the Liberty communications rather gratifying! I have a couple more images that I’ll try and post up here in the near future (à la repost).

Regardless the way it is shot, I thought the work is charming.
Beautifully crafted designs here with a great sense of aesthetic.
    Thanks for sharing

  8. I agree – is his work not more important than the colour of board it is shot on?

  9. David

Jia, I’m sure Daniel will be chuffed to hear that :)

Neil, Exactly. This wasn’t meant to be a discussion on the way he photographed his work. Having said that, I felt the need to establish a few things first [in response to Darren's comment] before people start to think that this is an invitation to be critical without substance.

  11. We’ve had a similar comment on Bitique in response to posting a studio that used the ‘Made Thought’ look. Now if people were pilfering the design work of someone else then that’s a major issue.

We featured Daniel’s work previously and it has to be said it’s proper nice (best to finish on a positive note!).

  12. I don’t have such a problem with the grey background thing.

These things seems to come in and out of vogue like nobodies business anyway i.e. a couple of years back it was peoples fingers being shot whilst holding posters up, or bulldog clips; before that people thought shooting on top of wooden/laminate flooring was the coolest thing ever (remember that?!).

It’s the work that’s important and that seems pretty good in this instance.

BTW: not the same Darren as above (in case you thought that was a dramatic about turn!)
