Look Magazine & Linda van Deursen Poster
Design Everything Studio
“Look was a retail fixture company based in New York. Every year the company would release a ‘maglog’ — a compound of a magazine and product catalogue. The magazine was an NYC lifestyle section focused on interesting people, notable stores and newly opened restaurants. Clients could use the magazine as a city guide when visiting on business trips.
The design concept was to separate the dual sections through the central division of the saddle stitched signature. Shorter pages on grey paper divide the sections in each half. In essence, we synthesize editorial content into printing structures. Unfortunately, as we were about to go to press the company closed so we never saw the piece fully realized. This poster was designed to promote a lecture by Linda van Deursen at the Yale School of Art. Instead of imitating Linda’s style the poster is an attempt to synthesize ‘Duchness’ more broadly.
The structure of the design is formed through a grid of hand-drawn Linda van Deursen monograms. These twee antiquated forms serve as visual counterpoint to a more 20th century version of Dutch typography in the foreground. This top layer of modular overprinted type is meant to recall the typographic experimentation of Wim Crouwel. The red, and blue color scheme also speaks to Holland.”
Everything Studio is a multidisciplinary design firm in New York City, working in all areas of print and interactive design. I think it’s really refreshing to see more strong, typographic design coming out of the US. Thank you to Jessica @ Everything Studio for the love and support :) .
