So I spoke with the gracious Hannes a few weeks ago, and not only is he a regular to SeptemberIndustry (Thank you sir) he was also kind enough to send me some exclusive hi-res images of their recent work not available anywhere else online. Now I’m not going to explain my hostility towards 500px wide images (again), let’s just say that these larger images are a better way to appreciate the attention to detail that go into their beautifully crafted work. Happy Wednesday folks :)

British Council Newsletter A/W
The editorial theme of this issue explored the conversation between the British Council and it’s design network. For the first time, the issue was written by a range of contributors external to the Design & Architecture team. In order to communicate this, the front cover is folded and tabbed to reveal the list of contributors, so that the editorial departure is apparent before the reader has opened the booklet. The stocks and print specifications echo that of the Spring 2008 Newsletter, substituting the multi colour covers for a soft neutral grey.

For this newsletter we paired British Council Sans with Gothic Medium for headlines. A spot red is also used throughout as a highlight colour.

British Council Newsletter S/S
Published twice a year by the British Council, the Design and Architecture department newsletter is an update on past, current and up and coming projects. We wanted the newsletter to feel simple yet thoroughly upbeat; a celebration of the department’s achievements.
A selection of coloured cover boards were printed using a spot blue to black gradient, resulting in different colour results on each shade of board. The department’s statements of intent are given prominence on the back cover.

The headline font is Fatso, which is paired with British Council’s own typeface- British Council Sans.

Wood McGrath is a Graphic Design & Art Direction consultancy founded in 2007 by Suzy Wood & Martin McGrath who have built a reputation for innovative and playful visual communication solutions with an emphasis on well crafted typography and custom fonts and lettering.

To date they have designed magazines, exhibitions, books, identities, websites, posters, fonts and lettering, and remain open to many different types of design work. They see Wood McGrath as an opportunity to apply their combined skills in interesting and inventive ways to a broad range of briefs, rather than as a studio with a specialism in one area.

Art direction, design, and custom lettering for Lula, an independent fashion magazine based in London and distributed internationally, edited by Leith Clark.

Lula had a strong, existing graphic and typographic identity, but we felt it was time to freshen it up. We found a lighter weight cut of Lula’s identity font, Kursivschrift, we made some modifications and designed new ligatures that could be used on the fashion openers. This along with the introduction of Radiant, a bold and elegant sans, provided us with a new– yet very Lula– typographic system.

Promotional poster for photographer David Ryle, we also designed a logo which can be embossed by hand using a custom made stamp. The posters are printed on a paper stock traditionally used for billboards, the result is a tactile and unique piece of print.

I’ve been keeping a close eye on Collective Approach a new London based graphic design consultancy founded by Tom Ramsbottom (Moving Brands, Airside and Space) and Samuel Bebbington (BB/Saunders, Marque and MadeThought) ever since they made their debut on SeptemberIndustry back in June. And I must say, their latest piece for photographer David Ryle really hit the spot for me – simple, clear, beautifully produced communication.

CA have also just relaunched &Again an ever evolving online gallery which is now currently accepting submissions, if you would like to exhibit please apply here: exhibit@andagainandagain.com

Thanks again to Samuel for the nice big images.

Design & Art Direction Give Up Art
Photography Shaun Bloodworth
Client Tempa

Skream — “Outside The Box” Album (Tempa)
Words: Stuart Hammersley

This is the second album from Skream (Oliver Jones), a follow up to his 2006 self-titled debut also released on Tempa.
That debut album was one of the first music jobs that I had worked on together with Shaun, and it was a bit of a happy accident when we got a great shot of Skream in the midst of a heaving Leeds’ West Indian Centre for the cover, which has since become a bit of a favourite of ours, and also of Sarah Lockhart’s (who runs Tempa). She said it’s been her favourite Tempa cover so far (you can see it here). So for this follow-up there was some expectation; not least because in the intervening years Skream’s profile, along with that of dubstep, has grown quite considerably.

Shaun and I both liked the idea of using a different kind of portrait of Oliver (partly as a continuation of the cover we’d made for his debut, and partly as a snapshot to show how he’d changed since then) and taking our cue from the album’s title we employed the graphic square throughout the packaging.
I thought that the idea of covering the face of one of the scene’s biggest names was quite perverse in a way, and it seemed to fit with Tempa’s attitude as a label. Luckily the label were up for it, and credit to Shaun as well… he didn’t mind having a wonderful shot of his obscured with a big square!
(Shaun’s orig. portrait can be seen here —).

The album was released in a standard CD jewelcase, plus the two formats featured here — Deluxe CD box with an exclusive bonus ‘Skreamizm’ CD, and a limited edition vinyl box set, containing four discs. Print is four-colour process throughout.

Because this is a big release for them, the record label wanted the artist name and title to be fairly prominent on the final artwork, but I wanted to do this in a way that wouldn’t detract from the main cover imagery. So we took that idea of obscuring the face over into the cover type, and other type details, which appear partially hidden on various parts of the packaging. The main font used is Brauer Regular, set in uppercase. Storno is used for smaller body text and credits; its quirks providing a nice contrast to the clean lines of Brauer.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Give Up Art are such a class act – they continually produce beautifully crafted work with integrity – I guess that what happens when you’ve been in the business for over 25 years! Today’s Friday special highlights another fine achievement for GUA in its commitment to providing “top notch graphic design” and it gives me great pleasure to share with you these beautifully shot photographs of their packaging for Skream’s second album ‘Outside the Box’ which came out 2 weeks ago – you know where you saw them first ;)

I’d like to thank my main man Stuart @GUA for giving me the honor of featuring this project and I wish you all a great weekend.
Produced in collaboration with photographer Kalle Gustafsson. This piece focuses on British explorer John Balleny and his Antarctic voyage of discovery. This was the third in a series of commercial and exploring expeditions organized by London’s Enderby Brothers. It was on this voyage that Balleny penetrated deeper into the Ross Sea more than had been achieved previously, discovering what has since been named the ‘Balleny Islands’ and the Sabrina Coast.

The chart maps the route that the Eliza Scott made after leaving Amsterdam Island in November 1838, until it reached the previously undiscovered Balleny Islands in February 1839.
This piece aims to encourage inward investment in the area within science related sectors, by outlining the key considerations and opportunities. When I do decide to feature illustration (this being the 3rd time in 2 years!) It has to be something graphically strong, that doesn’t feel out of place on the site and the work of James Graham happens to tick both those boxes. It also helps that James is a regular contributor to Esquire (see the previous zine feature if you haven’t already) and (here comes the promo) has an exhibition of selected Esquire illustrations at House of Propellers running from the 13th August – 2nd September 2010. The exhibition features limited edition framed and unframed silkscreen and foil-blocked prints in a variety of sizes and also an A1 litho print (the one with lots of tiny men) that visitors can take away for just £1 squid.

Thanks again to Hari (Editor of the late, great Grafik) for the images and info.

“Filter is hybrid between a serious bookish journal and and a magazine and is in the format of 17×24 cm (our favorite standard format) and printed on both mat and glossy (Munken paper) paper in order to give the different features a different feel. Typefaces used are Dorian and Bau. We new there were going to be a hell of a lot of text for a magazine so we wanted a main body copy that would be highly readable yet interesting to look at in Display size. Dorian is so beautiful in big sizes and has a very nice calligraphic fell to it that we choose to interpretate as crafty quality that vouches for the quality of the content of the text. Bau with pre modernistic expression sits well with Dorian.”

Whilst I’m familiar with some of the bigger Danish design agencies and Danish designers that work in London (I know, that probably doesn’t count!) I’m sure there are plenty of medium to smaller sized studios out there pumping out fantastic work that I simply don’t know about. Well, in a bid to slowly change all that, after a routine session of “design hunting” (2 weeks ago) I came across Copenhagen based firm Pleks whose work, presentation and website pleasantly surprised me. And as you’d expect – I couldn’t settle for the size of the images on the site ;)

Thanks again to Mads for the images and the warm words. Please note: I was going to feature another project in this post but the images mysteriously disappeared, so whilst I try and salvage them, you’ll have to enjoy what you see here and on their site – I’m sure that won’t be too hard for you…

To create a ‘country-neutral’ brand identity for a boutique sandwich store concept to sell petite open-face sandwiches in Hong Kong.

The quirky and flamboyant type treatments are bespoke. They set the brand apart from the mass market one-size-fits-all mentality and communicate the personality, credibility and distinctiveness of the brand. The words form a monogram which gives a sense of heritage and personality to the brand. This is all offset against the contemporary and vibrant use of colour and simple application. The vertical stripes are inspired by English public school rugby colours.

To develop a brand identity for Coco Republic. A premium furniture and homewares retailer offering a range of sophisticated, contemporary and eclectic products from around the world.

The proposed creation of a unique style sensibility with an interesting juxtaposition between contemporary style and colonial charm. Drawing upon the various historical and geographical references gives the brand an eccentric and quirky personality and communicates the bespoke nature of it’s product.

Corporate identity, stationery, zine and promotional booklet for Sydney based boutique architecture studio.

The aim was to create a neutral platform for the studios work. Distinct enough to be memorable whilst not interfering or diluting the architecture projects. A monochromatic colour palette gives weight and authority to the brand collateral. The addition of and accent pastel colour injects an immediacy and topical quality to certain pieces.

Now I know what you’re probably saying to yourself: where are the printed samples?! To answer your question: they were recently produced in Australia, so it may take a while for them to arrive in the the UK. But to be honest with you, I’m happy enough with these digital representations – they look terrific! If you’re just as impressed as I am with the quality of Daniel’s work and are in need of his talents, he is on the lookout for freelance and collaborative work. You can in touch with him here.

Cheers again to Daniel for the images and info.
