Hedi Slimane

I’ve kept this link to myself for a while, but I decided that it was finally time to share the work of Hedi Slimane with the gracious readers of SeptemberIndustry. In case you are unfamiliar with him, he is credited as the inventor of the faux-hawk hairstyle and also divides his time between several continents as a photographer, architect and fashion designer. He is perhaps one of the reasons why I decided to become a graphic designer in the first place. Of course I was into record sleeves as a teen, but what interested me more was the high quality materials/finishes and minimal designs of his clothing for Dior Homme. This stimulated me to sketch my own collections, but after a while I figured that if I enjoyed designing my identity more than the clothes themselves, I was destined to be a graphic designer! Even though the two disciplines aren’t directly related, I’m inspired by the fact that we, as graphic designers, have the privilege to create beautiful printed objects, the same way a fashion designer creates a flawless piece of clothing that someone loves to wear.

  1. couldn’t agree more!!! slimane is a true visionary. anyone know who is credited with the graphics associated with dior homme during his reign at the atelier? – or is it slimane himself???

I believe Slimane himself, was responsible for the graphics associated with Dior Homme during his time at the atelier. Unfortunately his “Helvetica All-Caps style” now seems to have disappeared entirely, to be replaced by the more traditional Dior House style which is set in what appears to be a customised variation of the Cochin typeface.
Fingers crossed he gets his own brand up and running soon because his artistic direction was what made Dior Homme really special back in the day.
PS. Now it all makes sense why you designed a poster Littl’ans ;)

  3. Great link Mr.D

    Of course ;)

  5. thanks david. slimane’s posters for his photo exhibitions are particularly nice! – the minimal type & repeat image variants make me feel funny inside….

  6. David

I also feel that way about his posters and books. Nice to see that we’re in the same boat :) I think that if there was no such thing as minimalism, I’d probably “hang up” my Mac for good and start a funk band ;)

  7. no such thing as minimalism!?! – that’s like saying no such thing as air! – like you say david, i’ve been immensely influenced by hedi – which is interesting considering he works in such as different field than graphic design – but perhaps it’s not all that strange considering he is such a good graphic designer / photographer as well as fashion designer? now where did i put my sewing machine?….

I think the thing that inspires us the most about Slimane is his artistic direction. That’s what sets him apart from all the Lagerfeld’s and Armani’s.
On a different note… I hear that you’re also inspired by Raf Simons. Nice one ;)

  9. yeah – huge raf simons fan. different approach from slimane’s – structure vs. rock – but both have an unwavering commitment to their vision.

    so sharp.
