and the boxes were printed and manufactured in Japan. The dot matrix language and graphics are based on pimpled Golf balls.”
Who is Darrell Gibbons you ask?
This edited extract from our email conversation should make it clear as to who this rather “elusive” chap is and why I have great admiration for his accomplishments as a designer:
“I was at Mode for about 3 years in the early days when Ian and Phil set up from 2001-2004.
I worked/collaborated on most of the DaMa work at Mode, Lostrobot box, Mode Stationery, IdeaStore signage, Abbey collaboration with Adjaye and the Adjaye Website.
Previously I have worked at Imagination, Browns, North, Saturday and BB Saunders in their early days as well so I guess you could say I’ve been about a bit in the last 15 years.”
Obviously he can’t take all the credit for the projects he worked on whilst at Mode – Ian and Phil were of course the Creative Directors (it’s mandatory I mention that in this feature ;) ). Nevertheless, he’s had his head down working like madman for over a decade building up a fine body of work in the process, so it makes sense for Darrell to finally stand up and get his name out there – because it’s designers like Darrell, who we really need to know about and just maybe this will give other designers the incentive to follow his example and emerge from the shadows ;-) .
