The words ‘Graphic Design’ and ‘Illustration’ don’t mix particularly well on SI (despite there being an ‘illustration’ category) because the site has carved a unique niche for itself by offering a place for readers to discover and be inspired by the very best contemporary graphic design (with the occasional photographic feature). When I do decide to feature illustration (this being the 3rd time in 2 years!) It has to be something graphically strong, that doesn’t feel out of place on the site and the work of James Graham happens to tick both those boxes. It also helps that James is a regular contributor to Esquire (see the previous zine feature if you haven’t already) and (here comes the promo) has an exhibition of selected Esquire illustrations at House of Propellers running from the 13th August – 2nd September 2010. The exhibition features limited edition framed and unframed silkscreen and foil-blocked prints in a variety of sizes and also an A1 litho print (the one with lots of tiny men) that visitors can take away for just £1 squid.
Thanks again to Hari (Editor of the late, great Grafik) for the images and info.
