I stumbled across the tasty portfolio of Zürich based designer Kobi Benezri the other day and couldn’t help but notice that he was responsible for the design of the bible-like, design compendium: Area 2, or so I thought…

“The book was actually designed by Julia Hasting, the design director of Phaidon Press and also my partner. I worked with Julia on the book and among other things I designed a custom font especially for that book which I later developed further until its release by Lineto.com under the name ‘Lettera’.”

Kobi was also kind enough to elaborate on the concept of the book itself:

“The concept of the layouts for Area 2 came in response to the wide range of materials in the book – different formats and mediums: posters, books, packages, type specimens, and illustrations. These kinds of survey books usually tend to look very packed because of that, and it is hard to make the layouts look elegant. So the idea was to display the artwork in the same way we received it from the participating designers: as an eclectic collection of /images piled on one’s desk instead of placing them on a book grid. We added a thin frame and a shadow to each image and they were carefully styled as if they were randomly thrown on the page.”

Acknowledgments: Kobi and Julia.

  1. Just bought Area 2 via Ebay the other day – can’t wait for it to arrive!

It’s definitely a nice addition to any designer’s constantly growing book collection – plenty of well executed, contemporary work.
