Progress Packaging x MadeThought

This is the second installment of a collaboration between SeptemberIndustry and Progress Packaging—the aim of which is to showcase current/upcoming projects from one of the UK’s best packaging firms.
Pictured is a heat welded metallised foil mailing bag with peel and seal flap, designed by MadeThought for Mill, a world renowned, Oscar-winning visual effects company based in London, New York and LA.

  1. I love The Mill logo, and featured it a while back on my blog (linked to through my name). There was quite a split decision about it, but I enjoy the simplicity.

    I think the Mill logo is pure genius. It’s so strong, yet so simple.
    I did actually read the snippet of information in the book “Logo” but I must say that the first thing it reminded me of was that of an old Mill building as opposed to lengths of film. That is probably the genius of this logo – it has the ability to represent many different things, whilst still staying relevant to the Mill brand.

  3. I’m with you David… absolutely genius logo. It’s one of those logos that actually makes me angry that *I* didn’t come up with the idea. :D

    I do love the simplicity of the Mill logo, but I’m always reminded of the MIT Press logo.
    I don’t know who, or when it was created, but I do have a a book dated from the 70′s with the logo on the spine, although very similar, they are both brilliant examples of reduction!

    Don’t worry about it.
    I checked out the MIT logo, and I must say that the resemblance is uncanny. As similar as they appear to be, I think it’s just another one of those been done before concepts of reducing roman characters to striped lines. Clearly, no one is guilty of plagiarism because each logo has a solid, relevant idea behind it.

    Bibliothèque’s Milligram logotype uses a similar concept, although it has more to do with measurement than reduction:

  6. true, they are all very similar logos – once you’ve reduced a letterform to it’s basic vertical strokes, you create and inevitable commonality. what i like most about MT’s work for the Mill is the identity package in it’s entirety – all the graphical elements are finely balanced and carefully considered – minimal, but not self-indulgently so.

    Peter,

    You are as observant as ever. MadeThought’s work for Mill in general isn’t short of superb. Don’t get me wrong, I think the current literature/packaging for Mill has been executed with much rigour; however, I personally prefer Mill’s old “sophisticated” image, where, the literature/packaging was pared down to a more Grotesque typeface accompanied by a darker colour scheme.
