Barbican – Radical Nature Branding
Design Research Studios

Research Studios have a new site on the way (later in ’09) so for the meantime they have left us with a blog-esque type mini-site (running on WordPress) showcasing some of their most recent projects. Naturally I had to showcase their visual identity for the Barbican – Radical Nature exhibition which really is a testament to the brilliance of the Barbican corporate identity programme which was designed by none other than North many moons ago.

Bah, when IS north gonna do their own site? I’d probably spent half my days there.

Whenever I mention North in a post or article, at least one person has to bring up the fact that they don’t have a proper website that showcases their projects ;)

The last time I spoke to Stephen (a couple of months back) he mentioned that have indeed started work on their website, however due to their intensely busy schedule they’ve struggled to keep the momentum up. Better late than never as they say.

Really good news. Would love to see their work documented online! Impossible to even google them.

Very true. I think you’ll find that currently the best place to see their work is on Flickr ;)

    nice green
but I have no love for RS, been using the sam identity recently and it is WACK

North designed this really…. not RS

  6. The Barbican identity is one of my favourite pieces of graphic design ever. The brand guidelines are amazing – and it’s basically just Futura!

It’s probably a good thing that North don’t have a website because I too would spend half my days on there, trawling through their work looking for “inspiration” – ha

that said though, having a search engine optimised website would probably benefit them in terms of new business… although I doubt they need any help in that area

The day North launch a proper website it will be a big deal!

This project by Research Studios is really well executed too – very nice indeed, all the way through from print to screen

    Emir,
Look at this way: North wrote the instructions (guidelines), RS designed this particular identity with those instructions (guidelines) in mind. Whilst the level of expression they have is limited or rather controlled, it’s still “expression” which North can’t take all the credit for. But I can understand the point you were trying to make.

    Luke,
The design industry has changed a lot in the past couple of years, and it will no doubt continue change with the rapid succession of the internet and technology. Whilst it would be interesting to see how long North could go without a proper website, I think they will have to adapt with the times or be left behind. These days establishing a strong presence in the virtual world is just as important having a strong presence in the real world, just look at how many consultancies are embracing social networking and RSS feeds of late.

its cool i know all of this, i just really dislike Neville Brody and everything associated with him, this was just an “expression” of my disdain

    ;)
