The Luxury of Protest

I’ve lost count on the amount of times that the ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart Again’ poster has been re-printed ;) People obviously like it if it’s manage to sell out repeatedly! If you were one the unlucky individuals that didn’t get the chance to purchase a copy, now’s your chance, because Design Supremo are now selling the fourth and final incarnation of the poster designed by Mr. Peter Crnokrak AKA The Luxury of Protest, lovingly screen printed by K2 onto 270gsm Celloglas Mirri H metallic gray paper using ‘chalk white’ ink.
Cheers to Ben for the tip.

  1. People are going nuts over this poster (as well as RAC brand guides!!), and rightly so.
I like it too and it’s good to see design having such an effect over people’s wallets, after all ‘It’s all about the benjamins baby’ as one purveyor of hip hop lyrics once spat…

    or is it?

    B

It’s in our nature to collect things that we don’t actually need ;)

  3. Alex

70-85 quid for a poster! I have a fair idea of how much K2 would cost for a poster on mirri (as they’re printing a poster of mine on a similarly expensive stock now) and he’ll be raking it in! It is a nice poster but I personally wouldn’t pay over 50quid for any poster unless its a Hofmann or Müller-Brockman or such like obviously!

  4. David

It is quite expensive, but the the demand seems to be high, so obviously he’s going to feel quite chuffed with himself once they sell out again :)

  5. People are buying it, so really the design has earnt it…

  6. Alex

mmmm… or there’s just a lot of mugs out there!

  7. lol.

There are many ‘mugs’ as you call them out there, and there always will be.
But it still stands that the design has earned it’s money, even if it’s a mug’s money.

  8. David

    :D

Quality design is a valuable commodity – if you are interested in design blogs I would have thought you’d agree. I’d grace my walls with this, it’s a stunning design.

  10. David

Absolutely Judy. However certain designs don’t appeal to all designers.

  11. Alex

Yes I’m interested in design blogs. But I’m not going to over value design! It ain’t gonna save the world Judy!

  12. u_helv

Hahaha I agree Alex, I don’t know whether it’s me getting older and more comfortable with my own identity, or that I’m starting to understand the value of my hard earnt pennies, but overpriced graphic design ephemera is something I struggle to buy into, I might be tempted by Brockmann, Hoffmann, Otl Aicher Munich poster, as I would feel like I was buying an essential and influential image of our culture, not only of graphic design culture, and who’s to say in time this is going to be one of those images that defines 21 Century design?, I doubt it!, it’s just another piece in a over saturated and over priced market!

  13. J

Judy, yes quality design is a valuable commodity, but that value isn’t purely monetary … I have to agree with u_helv and alex – again we are back to the money issue – regardless of the design, £75 for me is just too much for a poster. Again I go back to the idea of perspective… it’s just a poster… I love design, especially this kind of design as much as anybody on here but if we start taking ourselves as designers to seriously, putting too high a value on these things we seek to remove ourselves from the very culture we are trying to persuade could benefit from. I feel that design should be inclusive not exclusive.

  14. price is £85, not £75 – that 10 quid makes a difference in my monthly Porsche payments.

  15. J

jokes aside maybe you could detail how you came to that price peter?

  16. what some of you (apologies if i’m being presumptuous) perhaps don’t see in the poster is time required in gathering the information presented – no small feat. additionally, the graph was not produced using an automated data processing program – all illustrator hand-work – every single line of text, strings of dots and radiating lines. why the negativity? – do you really think that the poster (or my other graphic artwork) is simply a money-making scheme?

    really?

  17. J

i wouldn’t make any assumptions about your motives, it’s just a fact that i find this and many similar graphic posters/ltd editions to be overpriced. now that’s not negativity to your design which i think is beautiful. if you feel £85 is justified then that is your opinion and its just poster. but there is a whole bunch of potential buyers who are put of but that figure.

  18. Judy

Well said Peter, I’m with you. I love your work and think it makes a valuable contribution to the world of design in our time.

  19. i appreciate the constructive criticism – i really do. what i find particularly sad is how quick certain people are to de-value design art – why? is graphic design output really only worth say £50? – or better yet, how about a cap of £30? do we really think that little of ourselves and the value of what we create?

my motivation in producing Love Will… was purely based on the love of the song and Joy Division. my ability to continue to produce pieces like this and A_B_ (which took 1 full month to create) is dependent on recouping the cost of my time – it is unsustainable to work at a loss.

    all my love, p.

  20. Alex

Judy, you could be a copywriter! Not a great one mind.

  21. J

i just wish i could afford to buy one.

  22. “Art is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.”

    - I think design is worth so much more.

    Bob

  23. David

J and Peter made some great points, but at the end of the day it all comes down to your disposable income regardless of how beautiful the piece of design is. Im sure there are many out there that would love to buy this poster but can’t due to financial reasons. It’s the world we live in Im afraid.

  24. I still love it – whatever you all say!
